TNPSC Group 1 · Prelims · Mains

Where to study for TNPSC Group 1, and how much time each unit deserves.

Built on TNPSC's official Group 1 syllabus — how many questions each Prelims unit carries, how many marks each Mains unit is worth, which Samacheer Kalvi books cover it, and a free planner that turns it into today's sessions, in Tamil or English.

Group 1 candidates rarely ask whether to study. They ask where, because the syllabus is wide and every coaching list adds more books. TNPSC answers part of it for you: the official syllabus says how many Prelims questions each unit carries and how many marks each Mains unit is worth. In Prelims, three units carry 130 of the 175 General Studies questions, and General Science carries 10.

Everything below comes from TNPSC's official Group 1 syllabus, so you can decide where to study by the real weights.

TNPSC Group 1: three stages, and what each one decides

StageWhat it isCounts for rank?
PrelimsOne objective paper: 175 General Studies questions (degree standard) and 25 Aptitude and Mental Ability questions (SSLC standard) — 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hoursNo — screening only
MainsA Tamil eligibility paper (SSLC standard) and three descriptive General Studies papers of 250 marks eachGeneral Studies papers: yes, 750 marks. Tamil paper: qualifying only
Interview100 marksYes
  • There is no negative marking in Prelims, so attempt every question.
  • Your rank is decided out of 850 marks: the three Mains General Studies papers and the interview.

Because Prelims only screens, a good plan studies its units in a way that also serves Mains: short notes you can later turn into answers, not just facts for multiple choice.

Where to study for Group 1 Prelims, unit by unit

The unit names and question counts are from TNPSC's official Group 1 syllabus. Current events are part of every unit, so keep a daily newspaper slot from the first week.

Unit (official syllabus)QuestionsWhere to study
Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu50Economics, Classes 6–12; one standard Indian economy reference; Tamil Nadu government policy notes; Tamil Nadu welfare schemes, social justice and reservation policy, and development indicators
Indian Polity40Civics, Classes 6–10, and Political Science, Classes 11–12; one standard Polity reference; the text of the Constitution for articles and schedules
History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu40History and Tamil textbooks, Classes 6–12; Thirukkural; the Justice Party, the Self-Respect Movement and Tamil Nadu's part in the freedom struggle
History, Culture of India and Indian National Movement25History, Classes 6–12
General Science10Science, Classes 6–10; Class 11–12 chapters only for topics that recur in previous papers
Geography of India10Geography, Classes 6–12; an atlas, with maps of India and Tamil Nadu
Aptitude and Mental Ability25Mathematics, Classes 6–10: simplification, percentage, ratio, HCF and LCM, interest, area and volume, time and work; previous-year papers for reasoning

Two things follow from those numbers:

  • Economy, Polity and Tamil Nadu are three quarters of the paper. 130 of 175 General Studies questions sit in those three units. They get the first months and the longest daily block.
  • The 10-question units are where hours disappear. General Science and Geography are wide subjects with few questions. Read the school books once, make short notes, and stop there until revision.

Read the Classes 6–12 books unit by unit, turning each chapter into one page of notes, before you open any reference book. Most of what a reference adds only makes sense once the school-book picture is in place.

Where to study for Group 1 Mains, paper by paper

Frequently asked questions

Where should I study for TNPSC Group 1?
Start with the Samacheer Kalvi (Tamil Nadu State Board) textbooks for Classes 6 to 12 — History, Geography, Civics and Political Science, Economics and Science — because Group 1 Prelims General Studies is set at degree standard. Add one standard reference each for Indian Polity and the Indian economy, Tamil Nadu government policy notes for development administration, a daily newspaper, and previous-year papers.
Are Samacheer Kalvi books enough for TNPSC Group 1?
They are the base, not the whole of it. The Classes 6 to 12 books cover most of Prelims, but the two biggest units, Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu (50 questions) and Indian Polity (40), need one standard reference each plus Tamil Nadu policy notes, and Mains needs current material and answer-writing practice on top.
Which Group 1 units should I study first?
The three heaviest Prelims units — Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu (50 questions), Indian Polity (40) and the Tamil Nadu history, culture and heritage unit (40). Together they carry 130 of the 175 General Studies questions. General Science and Geography carry 10 each.
Do Group 1 Prelims marks count for the final rank?
No. Prelims is a screening test with no negative marking. Your rank comes from the three Mains General Studies papers (250 marks each) and the interview (100 marks), 850 marks in all. The Mains Tamil eligibility paper is qualifying only.
How long does TNPSC Group 1 preparation take?
Most full-time candidates give Group 1 ten to twelve months, Prelims and Mains together. If you are working, plan for roughly half as long again, and start writing one Mains answer a day by the middle of your preparation rather than after Prelims.
How is Group 1 different from Group 2 and Group 4?
The Prelims General Studies units have the same names, but Group 1 asks 175 General Studies questions at degree standard, against 75 in Group 2 and Group 4, and has no language section in Prelims. Group 1 also has three descriptive Mains papers and an interview.
Can I prepare for Group 1 in Tamil?
Yes. Set Tamil as your study language and Lighthouse Prep writes study material, revision questions and mock-test explanations in Tamil, keeping technical terms in English with their Tamil equivalent alongside.
Does the app have TNPSC Group 1 mock tests?
Yes, for Prelims — full-length Group 1 Prelims mock tests with 175 General Studies and 25 aptitude questions in three hours. Your first mock test is free. Mains is a written exam, so practise it with timed answers.
Is the Group 1 planner free?
Yes. The planner, session timer, spaced revision and reports are free. AI features such as generating study material use credits, and every account starts with 50,000 free.
