TNPSC Group 2 · Group 2A · Prelims and Mains

TNPSC Group 2 and 2A study plan: where to study, and how much time each unit deserves.

Built on TNPSC's official syllabus — how many questions each Prelims unit carries, which Samacheer Kalvi books cover it at degree standard, and a free planner that turns it into today's sessions, in Tamil or English.

Group 2 and Group 2A candidates sit the same Prelims, and most of them have the same question: where to study, now that General Studies is at degree standard. The answer is mostly the books a Group 4 candidate uses, read further. The unit weights are the same as Group 4, so the same units deserve the most time; what changes is how deep you go in each.

Everything below comes from TNPSC's official syllabus and notifications, so you can plan by the real weights instead of guesswork.

TNPSC Group 2 and 2A Prelims: the paper

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Tamil or General English (SSLC standard)100150
General Studies (degree standard) and Aptitude and Mental Ability (SSLC standard)75 + 25150
Total — one 3-hour objective paper200300
  • The qualifying mark is 90 out of 300 for every community, and there is no negative marking.
  • Prelims is a screening test. Its marks decide who goes to Mains, not your final rank, but the shortlist is drawn from the top of the Prelims marks, so aim well above 90.
  • The language section is half the paper. You choose General Tamil or General English; General Studies and aptitude questions are set in Tamil and English.

Where to study for TNPSC Group 2 Prelims, unit by unit

The General Studies units and question counts are from TNPSC's official syllabus. The sources are the Samacheer Kalvi school textbooks, which are available in Tamil and English medium.

Unit (official syllabus)QuestionsWhere to study
General Tamil or General English100Tamil (or English) textbooks up to Class 10: grammar, vocabulary, literature and comprehension; previous-year language papers
Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu20Economics, Classes 6–12; Tamil Nadu government policy notes; Tamil Nadu welfare schemes, social justice and reservation policy
History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu20History and Tamil textbooks, Classes 6–12; Thirukkural; the Justice Party, the Self-Respect Movement and Tamil Nadu's part in the freedom struggle
Indian Polity15Civics, Classes 6–10, and Political Science, Classes 11–12
History, Culture of India and Indian National Movement10History, Classes 6–12
General Science5Science, Classes 6–10
Geography of India5Geography, Classes 6–12; maps of India and Tamil Nadu
Aptitude and Mental Ability25Mathematics, Classes 6–10: simplification, percentage, ratio, HCF and LCM, interest, area and volume, time and work; previous-year papers for puzzles, number series and other reasoning

Three things follow from those numbers:

  • The language section comes first. It is half your marks, and it needs daily practice rather than one long pass.
  • The two Tamil Nadu units carry 40 of the 75 General Studies questions. Economy with development administration and Tamil Nadu history get the longest General Studies blocks.
  • General Science and Geography carry 5 questions each. Read the school books once and make short notes; leave their Class 11–12 chapters for after everything else.

If you have prepared for Group 4, you already know these units. Go back to the same chapters in the Class 11 and 12 books, and add Tamil Nadu policy notes for the development administration questions, which is where degree-standard questions go beyond the SSLC books.

A 16-week TNPSC Group 2 Prelims study plan

This plan follows the question weights: the language section every day, the heavy Tamil Nadu units first, the 5-question units later, and the last month for full papers.

After Prelims: what changes for Group 2 and Group 2A Mains

Mains is where Group 2 and Group 2A split.

  • Both sit a Tamil eligibility paper at SSLC standard that only has to be cleared.
  • Group 2 writes a descriptive General Studies paper of 300 marks at degree standard: the Prelims units again, written as answers.
  • Group 2A's General Studies paper is objective.

TNPSC has changed the Mains scheme more than once in recent cycles, so plan the details from the notification you apply under. Where to study does not change much. Your Prelims notes and the Classes 6–12 books are the base for both. Group 2 candidates add one timed answer a day from the week Prelims ends; Group 2A candidates add more previous-year questions and more depth in the Class 11–12 books.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I study for TNPSC Group 2 and 2A?
The Samacheer Kalvi (Tamil Nadu State Board) textbooks. Use Classes 6 to 12 for General Studies, because that part of the paper is set at degree standard, and Classes 6 to 10 for the language section and aptitude, which are set at SSLC standard. Add Tamil Nadu government policy notes, a daily newspaper and previous-year papers.
Is the Group 2 syllabus the same as Group 4?
The General Studies units and their question counts are the same — 75 General Studies and 25 aptitude questions, with the two Tamil Nadu units carrying 20 each. What changes is depth. Group 2 General Studies is set at degree standard, so you need the Class 11 and 12 books as well. And instead of Group 4's Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test, Group 2 lets you choose General Tamil or General English.
Are Samacheer Kalvi books enough for TNPSC Group 2?
For Prelims they cover almost all of it, provided you read the Classes 11 and 12 books too, not only Classes 6 to 10. Add Tamil Nadu policy notes and scheme details for development administration, and current affairs of the last twelve months.
Should I choose General Tamil or General English?
Choose the one you can score more in. The language section is 100 of the 200 questions, half your Prelims marks, so take a full previous-year language paper in each before you decide.
Is there negative marking in TNPSC Group 2 Prelims?
No, so attempt every question. The qualifying mark is 90 out of 300 for every community, but candidates for Mains are shortlisted from the top of the Prelims marks, so 90 is the floor, not the target.
What is the difference between Group 2 and Group 2A?
They share one Prelims. They differ at Mains, where Group 2 writes a descriptive General Studies paper and Group 2A's General Studies paper is objective. Both sit a qualifying Tamil eligibility paper.
How long does TNPSC Group 2 preparation take?
Most full-time candidates give Group 2 Prelims about six months. If you have already prepared for Group 4, the unit list is familiar and four months of Class 11 and 12 depth plus full papers is often enough. Working candidates should plan for roughly half as long again.
Can I prepare for Group 2 in Tamil?
Yes. Set Tamil as your study language and Lighthouse Prep writes study material, revision questions and mock-test explanations in Tamil, keeping technical terms in English with their Tamil equivalent alongside.
Does the app have TNPSC Group 2 mock tests?
Yes — full-length Group 2 and 2A Prelims mock tests, 200 questions in three hours like the real paper. Your first mock test is free.
Is the Group 2 planner free?
Yes. The planner, session timer, spaced revision and reports are free. AI features such as generating study material use credits, and every account starts with 50,000 free.
